Grand Gestures Of Love: Movie Style
grand gestures of love to win her back: Movie Style
Romance is for many all about the little things, those everyday considerations for another. That said, a grand gesture of love is pretty much always welcome and can be used for special occasions or even getting you out of the dog house. Of course they’re also suitable for announcing your feelings to an unsuspecting object of your affection. Obviously coming up with said grand gesture isn’t always that easy, which is where we turn to Hollywood. The silver screen is full of such moments and here are some that you can recreate…
The Notebook
Grand and likely to feature in a public safety vignette Noah’s (Ryan Gosling) method of securing a date with Allie (Rachel McAdams) in The Notebook is risky. He basically scales freestyle the Ferris wheel she’s riding to ask for a date with the caveat that he’ll let go and plunge to his death if she refuses. Slightly psychotic, but it works. If you intend to do the same take care, and be aware that due to the advent of a nanny state this sort of behaviour is far more frowned upon than it was in the 1940s and is likely to have more severe consequences once you’ve returned to terra firma(1).
Wild At Heart
Serenading the one you desire is a brilliant way to express your feelings, however you do need to be able to sing. Also song choice is important, a One Direction track just isn’t going to do it… Wild At Heart pays homage throughout to the Wizard Of Oz and Elvis. And it is Love Me Tender, the greatest ballad ever written, that Sailor (Nicholas Cage) sings to Lula (Laura Dern) in the middle of a traffic jam. To recreate this accurately you’ll need to find a lot of stationary traffic and leap from car roof to car roof… The M25 is probably your best bet…
The Graduate
An amazing gesture, but it’s going to cause a stir and probably make you very unpopular with a lot of people. But then that’s the risk of a grand gesture. Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) breaks up Elaine’s (Katherine Ross) wedding by declaring his love noisily and throwing himself against the glass at the back of the church during the ceremony. The two of them then flee the scene via bus. Obviously your loved one needs to be getting married and be willing to ruin her big day to ride the bus with you. These are not things that are going to be done on a whim. However if it’s true love, better late than never, right? Right?!
Empire Strikes Back
This requires you to be very much in love with a rogue and not really know it, until the moment comes when he is captured by the ruling but somewhat right wing government, frozen in carbonite, and given to one of the greatest bounty hunters in the galaxy to deliver to a giant slug of a gangster. Yes, this is the plight of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). The mardy and playing hard to get rebel sympathising princess realises that Han is actually a hotty and she totally digs him just as he is about to get his ass frozen, thankfully she lets him know by planting a corker of a smooch right on him. Obviously recreating this gesture accurately is going to be tricky, but take the essence and go with it. Be true to your feelings you never know when the object of your affection might end up as nice piece of wall art in a gangster den(2)…
Hopefully these grand gestures will see you right and if not, you’re going to have one hell of a tale to tell!
