Worst Gifts You Should Avoid Giving Your Partner

Gifts You Shouldn’t Give to Your Loved One

We all know that when it comes to picking gifts for their loved ones, sometimes people struggle. I use the word people since I don’t wish to come across as overly sexist; indeed there are many women I know who are absolutely shocking at picking a good present to give to their husband or boyfriend on Valentine’s Day.

Worst Gifts You Should Avoid Giving Your Partner

When it comes to picking a great present, you need to be confident that you understand the personality of the person you are buying for, and the only way to be totally sure of that is if you’ve been with them for long enough, or just have one of those instant connections many of us envy. If you aren’t fully up to speed on their likes and dislikes, you might end up on a list like the one below in the future(1)!

The World’s Most Shocking Valentine’s Gifts

There are some brilliantly painful choices of gifts for Valentine’s Day that have been given to loved ones over the years. If your girlfriend or wife is a little bit conscious about her weight or appearance, getting her an exercise bike for the big day is probably not the best idea, although from looking around the internet it seems that an unfortunate amount of women have been subjected to this dubious ‘gift’.

Real roses or simply flowers in general are often a safe and thoughtful gift, however you should avoid giving them to anyone who is actually severely allergic to them, especially if they have already mentioned their allergies to you several times in the past. If you do, you’re likely to be involved in what will seem like a scene from the Will Smith film Hitch, where your loved one is left to sleep off the allergy medicine thanks to your adventures in the florists.

While skin moisturiser or cosmetics are likely to be a brilliant gift, you’ll probably want to draw the line at giving your girlfriend hair dye or coloured fashion contact lenses for a nice surprise. While your heart might be in the right place, you will seem like you are suggesting she needs to change her appearance for you to keep enjoying her, which is never a good precedent to set in any relationship(2).

My personal favourite, though, has to be the woman who contacted me recently with her story from the Valentine’s Day just gone. Her other half not only bought her a very ugly bag which didn’t match any of her current fashion collection, he accidently left a card in it which was addressed to the woman he was cheating on her with – oops! Needless to say those two are no longer a couple, and I’d urge you to be a little more careful and much less stupid than the man in question.
