Platinum is strong, hard, and will withstand the test of time. Although it is silver colored all the way through, it may also become dull after it has been worn for some time. Taking your band into the jewelers periodically will keep you ring looking like new.

The size of band may change the entire look of the ring. Women who have delicate fingers may prefer a thinner band. Still others like a dramatic thick band to wear on their ring finger. If you aren’t quite sure which to get, look at your girlfriend’s existing rings. Are they large and showy, or more dainty and delicate?(2)

The setting is attached to the band and is needed to hold the gemstone in place. Your setting may be invisible or prolonged. One technique used to provide contrast in the ring is to match a gold band with a platinum setting. The platinum also provides the strength that is needed to secure the gemstone. If the ring is going to be worn through significant activity, you may want to consider getting a bezel or a six pronged setting for security. Having the right setting is important to keep from losing your precious gemstone.

The Gemstone

Traditionally, the gemstones for an engagement ring and wedding ring have been loose diamonds; however, there are many unique wedding rings which use other beautiful gemstone as well, including emeralds, amethysts, and rubies. Also known as the rock, media has stereotyped a bigger diamond to be better. This is not always the case. Gemstone prices will vary depending on their carat, cut, clarity, and color. You could purchase larger cut loose diamonds that have a significant number of flaws for approximately the same price as a smaller diamond that is nearly perfect.(3)
