A Beginner’s Guide To Engagement Ring Shopping
The time has come and you’re ready to take your relationship to the next level. Although you may be nervous about posing the big question to the woman you love, having the perfect ring can make all of the difference. Whether you are a diamond expert or a precious stone novice, there are certain characteristics that you must look for to ensure it is quality.
The Band
You may think the band is simply the circular part of the ring that fits on the finger; however, it is a little more complicated. You can find bands in gold, white gold, silver, and platinum. Knowing your girlfriend’s preference is important in making this decision. While gold has a traditional look, white silver and platinum are the most popular choices.(1)
White gold is gold that has been mixed with other metals to give it a silvery color. It is then plated with rhodium, giving it a bright and shiny appearance. As the plating wears off, however, the band may begin to reflect a yellowish tint. Most reputable jewelry stores will replace the plating if it should wear off.
Platinum is strong, hard, and will withstand the test of time. Although it is silver colored all the way through, it may also become dull after it has been worn for some time. Taking your band into the jewelers periodically will keep you ring looking like new.
The size of band may change the entire look of the ring. Women who have delicate fingers may prefer a thinner band. Still others like a dramatic thick band to wear on their ring finger. If you aren’t quite sure which to get, look at your girlfriend’s existing rings. Are they large and showy, or more dainty and delicate?(2)
The Setting
The setting is attached to the band and is needed to hold the gemstone in place. Your setting may be invisible or prolonged. One technique used to provide contrast in the ring is to match a gold band with a platinum setting. The platinum also provides the strength that is needed to secure the gemstone. If the ring is going to be worn through significant activity, you may want to consider getting a bezel or a six pronged setting for security. Having the right setting is important to keep from losing your precious gemstone.
The Gemstone
Traditionally, the gemstones for an engagement ring and wedding ring have been loose diamonds; however, there are many unique wedding rings which use other beautiful gemstone as well, including emeralds, amethysts, and rubies. Also known as the rock, media has stereotyped a bigger diamond to be better. This is not always the case. Gemstone prices will vary depending on their carat, cut, clarity, and color. You could purchase larger cut loose diamonds that have a significant number of flaws for approximately the same price as a smaller diamond that is nearly perfect.(3)
