how to get a boyfriend
Stacey from Baltimore, MD writes:
“I haven’t had a good date in three years. I’m so tired of being single and listening to my friends go on and on about their boyfriends! I want to get back out there, but I don’t know where to begin. In school it was easy to meet people, but now that I’ve graduated from college I don’t really know where to go. How do I get a boyfriend?”
Hi Stacey. Your question describes a frustration shared by many! After school, it’s hard to know where to look. School not only gave us a way to meet a lot of people, but classes provided us with a way to meet people based on common interests. Once those common grounds are gone, where do you look? After you’ve met everyone in the office, you’ll need to find some new venues!
There’s always the good old pass-the-napkin-in-the-bar trick. Bars and clubs are good places to meet people, but neither really offers a chance to get more than a fleeting impression of someone. For some of us that’s good enough! For others, there needs to be a chance to bond over something deeper. If that describes you, it’s harder for you to meet people—even singles ads leave a lot to be desired. A quick blurb isn’t enough for you to find that certain “spark.”
There may be other activities you can get involved in locally to meet people. Think about joining local clubs for your interests. You can also try meeting people during volunteer sessions or at a church or temple if applicable. If none of that works, think about the internet.
The internet? How can you meet someone through the internet? It’s just text, right? Well, on one hand, yes, but on the other, no. There’s no room for small talk in that little text box. On the internet it’s much easier to get to the core of a person than it is when you’re face to face, at least in terms of intellect, interests, and values. So many of us are easily deceived by a pretty face or a charming smile, only to find that what was behind it didn’t match. On the internet you can join dating sites which will help you find people to talk to based on your interests (including what physical traits you are looking for!), values, life goals, and more. The matching algorithms do a lot of the hard work for you. When you go to a bar to meet someone, it’s pure chance. Imagine how much better your luck could be if you walked into a bar where the patronage was tailored for you. That’s what online dating sites are like.
